Limón investiert in Forschung und Entwicklung

Innovations, new methods, and detailed analyses of production processes play an important role in the implementation of energy efficiency measures in industrial companies.

This is why Limón GmbH participates in innovative research projects in search of new technical possibilities to more actively pave the way to the energy-optimized factory.

Project: C/sells – The energy system of the future in the southern German sun arch

Funding provided by: BMWi (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy)

Project partners: CUBE and EAM EnergiePlus GmbH

Term: 01.01.2017 – 12.31.2020

C/sells strives to create a cellular-structured energy system, figuratively speaking following the movement of the sun, from Bavaria in the east across Baden-Wuerttemberg to Hessen in the northwest. The east-west solar arch. Energy provision, use, distribution, storage, and additional infrastructure services will be optimized according to the principle of subsidiarity to the highest possible degree of autonomy within the individual cells, such as properties, districts, and cities. Linking the cells to create a network further allows joing action for a secure and robust energy infrastructure.

Limón GmbH is cooperating with its partners EAM and CUBE on this project. The primary focus is on developing, integrating, and demonstrating flexibility in trade and industry. In the context of the demonstration, the flexibility of an energy management system will be integrated with use optimization, resulting in technically and economically optimized schedules for regional and national markets. Limón has substantial practical experience in analyzing, designing, assessing, planning, and monitoring processes in trade and industry. CUBE's expertise lies in the technical and economic modeling and simulation of business models and operational concepts of flexible energy plants. By involving two partners with such extensive experience, existing analysis tools, and an interest in exploiting the results, the prospects of success are even higher.

Project: Smart Consumer

Funding provided by: BMWi (Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy)

Project partners: University of Kassel (Department of Sustainable Products and Processes), Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Arburg GmbH + Co KG, Ferrero Deutschland GmbH, Junghans Kunststoffwaren-Fabrik GmbH & Co. KG

Term: 07.01.2014 – 12.31.2017

In this major project, the University of Kassel, Arburg, Imtech, and Limón are realizing and testing actions to increase energy efficiency in the industry. The companies Ferrero and G. Junghans Kunststoffwaren-Fabrik, both of which have their headquarters in Hesse, have allowed their production sites to be analyzed in the context of this project. The main goal of the project is to implement intelligent solutions to control and reduce energy requirements in real production environment.

The Smart Consumer project consists of two parts. In the Smart Cogeneration subproject, focus is placed on optimizing energy provision to plastic-processing plants. Using Junghans as an example, the primary energy requirement and energy costs should be reduced by 50%. In the Smart Climate subproject at the candy company Ferrero, the focus is on saving energy in cooling and air conditioning. Besides a shift toward alternative, more efficient cooling technologies, only those areas will be cooled that actually require low temperatures.

Project: Climate-friendly food using cogeneration in production processes

Funding provided by: HA Hessen Agentur

Partners: University of Kassel - Department of Sustainable Products and Processes, Milupa GmbH, Rommel Heizungsbau

Term: 05.01.2014 – 12.31.2015

The goal of this research project is to develop a boiler system that can integrate steam, hot water, and the combination of both media as a heat source. Because of the two different heat sources, the concept is referred to as a hybrid boiler. Intelligent control of the hydraulic wiring permits direct use of hot water in the heat exchanger on the one hand, but can also decouple the boiler from the hot water network and switch to steam-only supply.

Project: SimEnergy

Funding provided by: HA Hessen Agentur

Partner: University of Kassel – Department of Production Organization and Factory Planning, Simplan AG, Volkswagen AG

Term: 04.01.2013 – 03.31.2015

This project addresses the simulation-aided planning and assessment of energy efficiency for production systems in the automotive industry. Based on existing and market-tested simulation tools, the SimEnergy research project will create the possibility to map the individual aspects of material flow and energy flow in interconnected simulation models. This will in turn facilitate the energy assessment of production and logistic processes. One potential application, for example, is to assess the effects of normal and stand-by operations for the production process or investigate consequences of powering systems on and off. With the holistic perspective, the energy prognosis can be improved, thus allowing more specific conclusions to be made in planning the energy requirement and generating energy savings potential of 20-30% per system.

Project: Process-chain oriented identification of temperature-dependent energy use and waste heat potential in the foundry industry

Funding provided by: Federal Environment Agency

Partner: IfG - Institute for Foundry Technology

Term: 11.01.2013 – 02.28.2015

The goal of this project is to identify temperature-dependent energy use and potential for waste heat recovery along the major process chains in the foundry industry (iron, steel, and non-ferrous casting). Based on these data, it will be possible to draw conclusions about the temperature-dependent energy use and potential for waste heat recovery for the entire foundry industry. These results will subsequently be used to determine and quantitatively depict the potential for using each type of temperature-dependent waste heat for current and future waste heat recovery and waste heat conversion technologies. The results of this project should serve to identify and develop early on the necessary technical innovations and take appropriate political measures to increase energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries.

Project: Energy-efficient blow film extrusion

Funding provided by: HA Hessen Agentur

Partners: University of Kassel – Department of Sustainable Products and Processes, Horn & Bauer GmbH & Co. KG, Rommel Heizungsbau

Term: 03.01.2012 – 11.30.2013

The goal of this project is to realize potential savings in terms of costs, energy, carbon, and resources by controlling the extruder temperature. To do so, a new system will be developed that allows for targeted heating and cooling. This includes a temperature control unit with a suitable working medium with which the new control and wiring concept will be realized.

Project: HIER! Hessen - Innovation for energy and resource efficiency

Funding provided by: HMUELV (Hessisches Ministerium für Umwelt, Energie, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz)

Partners: University of Kassel – Department of Sustainable Products and Processes, NATURpur Institute for Climate and Environmental Protection

Term: 05.01.2010 – 05.31.2013

"Hessen Innovation for Energy and Resource Efficiency (HIER!)" helps companies make their production process more efficient. This leads to substantially less energy consumption and an increase in energy productivity. Experts from the University of Kassel and Limón are jointly researching possibilities for companies to save energy in their production process. The project takes a holistic approach in the areas of education and training, development projects, and communication. Projects already underway as well as products that already exist will be supplemented by three strategic projects with high potential for efficiency and implementation. These projects are in the fields of reducing compressed air in production, cogeneration-suitable production, and production in air-conditioned rooms.
