Sector benchmarks - competition-oriented energy efficiency benchmarking

Up to 70% of the production costs in industrial companies can be attributed to energy-intensive processes. Energy procurement prices have doubled in the past 10 years, making energy efficiency a key factor for remaining competitive. As a solutions provider for custom energy efficiency measures, Limón offers comprehensive services especially for energy-intensive companies. One major component of this is the Limón sector benchmark.

What is the sector benchmark?

Benchmarking means learning from the best. The key question for energy-intensive manufacturing companies is: How can we improve our performance and cut energy costs at the same time?

To find clear-cut answers to this question, the Limón sectoral benchmark examines your company using a special indicator system as the basis.

With the help of predefined assessment factors and energy performance indicators, we will evaluate your production's core and auxiliary processes from an energy point of view.

Based on our comprehensive sectoral data pool, your company's results will be compared with those of the benchmark group and given to you in the form of a detailed report. You will benefit from our engineers' sectoral expertise, because Limón's specialists are familiar with the processes and complex interactions of energy flows in industrial companies from more than 800 projects.

Identify market trends and reach your optimization potential

The goal of the sector benchmark is to considerably increase your company's performance by conducting a differentiated comparison with competitors. The methodological comparison of main and auxiliary processes creates a clear picture of your status quo within the benchmark group. Not only your own position compared to that of the industry leader becomes apparent, but you can also identify hidden potential and ideas for improvement.

"What do others do differently and how does it make them more successful?"

Benchmarking helps you focus and prioritize your activies
and creates a solid foundation for corporate decisions.

Status quo analysis
  • Obtain a neutral and systematic analysis
  • Verify your own KPI system
  • Create transparency for energy costs and performance with significant KPIs of your own organization
  • Receive clear information on market prices and your position in the procurement market

High level of precision
  • Determine the position of your organization compared to the competition
  • Quickly identify strengths and weaknesses
  • Otain a professional interpretation of your results
  • Learn from the best and compare yourself with the "Best in Class"

Targeted implementation
  • Integrate your benchmarking results as an inherent part of your existing energy management system
  • Learn about improvements you can realize
  • Obtain a localization and assessment of your performance in comparison to companies with similar production conditions, processes, and targets
  • Reduce uncertainty when making major decisions for the company

What should you expect?

The sector benchmark is calculated according to a systematic procedure and is based on the Energy Efficiency Benchmarking Norm EN 16231. Yet it goes far beyond a simple analysis of your company that only takes key performance indicators (KPIs) of your own energy management system into account. The benchmark references KPIs from similar market players and thus allows you to determine your position in the competition.

Our process

The goals of the benchmark are established with a specific key performance indicator concept. The first phase involves consulting with the customer to determine the type and scope of the measurement and define responsibilities and capacities.

Data collection

The data necessary for the benchmark are collected by Limón engineers in the context of a systematic data collection and supported by temporary measurements. Relevant conditions and influencing factors are examined and categories are created to ensure comparability. The measurement is conducted at machine level and using mobile measuring devices. Key focus is on three types of data

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀1. Global KPIs -
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀such as energy prices, energy costs per gross value added, energy consumption related to company size

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2. Auxiliary processes -
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀KPIs and technology comparisons of auxiliary processes such as compressed air, ventilation, and cooling
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀3. Core processes -
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀KPIs and technology comparisons for core processes in your sector

When data collection is complete, the company-specific analysis and interpretation of KPIs and the comparison of key processes begins. The focus lies on the core processes because of their high energy consumption, but relevant auxiliary processes are also examined. Limón's extensive data pool and years of experience in numerous sectors refine the evaluation.

The final report includes the following key elements:

  1. Anonymized presentation of benchmark participants
  2. Description of processes and elaboration of general conditions
  3. Description of calculated KPIs
  4. The values of your company including your rank in the benchmark group
  5. Average values of the participants in the benchmark group
  6. Best-in-class values of your benchmark group
  7. Analysis and interpretation of the results
  8. Potential improvements and recommendations for efficiency measures

Cost-effiency for energy-intensive processes

By participating in the sector benchmark, you will profit from the identification of potential improvements from Limón's comprehensive expertise from hundreds of successfully completed efficiency projects. After completion of the benchmark, we will be happy to assist you with more targeted analyses and the development and realization of optimization concepts.

Our kick-off for benchmarking was in the plastics industry. Limón engineers who specialize in this field have been implementing a wide variety of projects, such as parameter optimization of injection molding machines, compressed air optimization, and plastic-specific dimensioning of interdisciplinary technologies.
